Henci Goer, award-winning medical writer and internationally known speaker, is the author of ‘The Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth’. Her previous book, ‘Obstetric Myths Versus Research Realities’, is a highly-acclaimed resource for childbirth professionals. An independent scholar, she is an acknowledged expert on evidence-based maternity care. Goer has written consumer education pamphlets and numerous articles for magazines as diverse as Reader's Digest and the Journal of Perinatal and Neonatal Nursing. She served as project director and participated as an Expert Work Group member on the document, "Evidence Basis for the Ten Steps of Mother-Friendly Care."


Currently, she is currently a resident expert on Lamaze International's website, the Lamaze Institute for Normal Birth. Now concentrating on writing and speaking, Goer was a doula (labor support professional) for over twenty years and a Lamaze educator for ten.

With our caesarean rates high, and still on the rise, there is much discussion about the pros and cons of caesarean section and models of care. 


Henci Goer will be here in Sydney to give you the information you need to Prevent the Preventable Caesarean.


Participants will be able to:


  1. *list excess harms of cesarean       surgery

  2. *explain why expectant couples must take a proactive role

  3. *list strategies for avoiding unnecessary surgery


There will also be a screening of the film Born in the USA, which will be followed by a discussion and allow participants to:


  1. *compare and contrast styles of care in hospital vs free-standing birth center vs home birth

  2. *determine which care practices are in line with evidence-based principles of care


The seminar is for Midwives, Doulas, Birth Educators  and Obstetricians.  The seminar is also open to the public who want to know more about their birth choices
